UGLY, UGLY SOBBING.

I don’t know what the Tom clip is from but i want to write it so much it hurts a little bit

except in mine, he’s black haired, still; his hair gets longer and longer and ends up in a braid -  I HEAR you, Katniss Everdeen, shut it - and he ends up working in a Greenwich Observatory, this genius on constellations who can’t remember or explain why he knows so much, who was found on his back in the park one night by a guard with a broken arm, and broken ribs, and broken memories. Who the hospital said has the body of a 29 year old but his eyes are much, much older. Who says his hands feel numb (because they miss the magic - he doesn’t know), which they think is poor circulation and the effects of the sting of cold that came with November, so he wears fingerless gloves all the time, even inside - it’s when he’s inside that the cold bothers him, they notice; the ice on the courtyard and the sharp winds don’t seem to bother him but he has the fire on at home every night.

He does the talks on the stars in the Planetarium, showing what constellations can be seen in that hemisphere and what ancient stories go with them, comes up with ones they’ve never heard, and he walks around the snowy park in his breaks with no coat on, and he doesn’t understand why he can run, run up and down the hill to the Observatory six times without even losing his breath but trying to climb the short, twisting black staircase to the telescope leaves him shaky and unable. As if he’s afraid to fall - as if he has fallen, fallen so far his body cant bear to risk it again. But he doesn’t remember.

It takes him months to get up there, without knowing why he must, and his colleague shows him how and where to look through the telescope’s refracting lense but he works the dials to move it to gaze somewhere else. A feeling in his mouth and an ache in his head as though he knows the co-ordinates but can’t sound out the name. He stares through it for as long as he can, trying to see something, and doesn’t - and there again that night, when he sleeps poorly again, again, is the definite, definite feeling that until he is missing something, someone so much that he gets up and cuts off his entire length of hair in one snap, leaves it sharp and so short that he can barely tuck the swing of it behind his ears.

It curls in the heat when he sleeps by the fire, and dreams of the man, again.
